Blog Assignment #3: The Skoll Foundation

Wed, July 14, 2010 - 5:20PM 0 Comments

"We are the undisputed leaders of technological change. But with our abundance of talent and resources, we also have the opportunity to be the pioneers of social change and, ultimately, this may be our greatest contribution. The Skoll Foundation is fully dedicated to this mission." -Jack Skoll

I chose to pick this foundation for it speaks volumes on how we all have to help be the change for a less fortunate society than one of our own.  Do you ever think of how fortunate we are to wake up to clean water instead of dirty ,infected water that could eventually be fatal to us? Why should it not be a concern to help those less fortunate than us whom are from another country?

As I researched The Skoll Foundation their vision is to help humanitarian projects through their social innovation programs. The goal of this foundation is to create a better world which is "sustainable, peaceful, and prosperous"(Jeff Skoll). The Skoll Foundation connects with other academic programs, businesses and non profit organizations in order to be a voice for change. They seek investors to help with obtaining clean water, for it costs dollars to improve an impoverished nation. They also create a team of social entrepreneurs to brainstorm ideas  to help fund initiatives such as these to bring about a better world.

Here are a few of the initiatives of the Skoll foundation that go toward promoting a better world:

  • The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship: A program which provides social entrepreneurs whose work could potentially impact the world significantly on issues such as tolerance and human rights, environmental sustainability, health, social equity, and peace and security, with a grant of approximately $750,000.  This award is important as it provides businesses and organizations the motivation and the means to which they can work toward a better world. Obviously issues such as tolerance and human rights are important, because after all the world would be a much better place if everyone were treated equally and we all got along. Another important issue they support is the issue of environmental sustainability. If the world continues to treat its environment the way it does we will ultimately destroy our planet, possibly making it unliveable for future generations.
  • Promoting organizations such as Citizen Schools, Room to Read, and Good Weave.
  • The Skoll World Forum: is the premier gathering of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs. Prominent figures from the social, academic, finance, corporate and policy sectors engage for three days and nights in a series of debates, discussions and work sessions focused on accelerating, innovating and scaling solutions to some of the world’s most pressing social issues

As a young Aboriginal youth living in Canada I have seen first hand the struggles and poverty that exists within the native reserves in our country. One reserve in particular, the Muscowpeteg native reserve, has no recreational facilities and is one of the poorest reserves in Canada. I would like to join forces with The Skoll Foundation to help fund the reserve, introduce recreational facilities such as public pools, and help end the poverty that these people face every day.

Hy Hy,

Shayla Oulette

"SUCCESS TO A STAR"

My tv show, 'Success to a Star', would focus on the steps towards becoming successful with your dreams and lifetime goals. You often see the lifestyle of a celebrity, famous actor, singer, dancer, etc. Have you ever wondered how they got there? What made their way for a ticket to success and fame? This TV show would present exactly what happens behind the scenes of the industry, provide advice to aspiring stars,  and an give insight into what really goes into success. The show would give viewers an inside scoop on the lives (before and after the rise to fame) of a certain role model, celebrity, actor, director, singer, etc.

Goal: To show the hard work that goes into achieving a high quality of life. Even if fame may seem glamorous, superior and high class, getting there and maintaining it takes time, patience, effort, determination, motivation and inspiration to get to the place where you want to be. From diva to down to earth this show would cover it all.

Sponsors: Faze Media: Connecting with the youth, Faze Media, provides a youthful magazine, events, newsletters, social networking etc. Faze would provide the show, Success to a Star, with the ultimate media coverage and advertisement it would need to grab viewers. Blog Assignment #1-Welcome to Medicine Hat!

Sat, July 10, 2010 - 1:11AM 0 Comments

Medicine Hat is where it's at!

About Medicine Hat:

"The City of Medicine Hat is a thriving city of approximately 61,097 (2009 City Census) residents. Located in southeastern Alberta, it is an excellent destination for all ages at any time of the year. Whether we are your final travel destination or you are passing through, stop for a visit, and see what we have to offer. Make Medicine Hat part of your plans."

Tourist Attractions

Medicine Hat Tipi: Since 1988 constructed for the Calgary Winter Olympics, the Saamis Tipi was a tribute to our native heritage. The tipi displays artwork, each displaying a story for native culture and history. The area was once a meat processing and buffalo camp.

Echo Dale Regional Park: Since Medicine Hat is the sunniest city in Canada you need a pla ce to cool off and take a dip in the water. Echo Dale is that place for you. Offering boating, swimming, farms and fishing, it is the number one family hang out spot. Escape the heat and dip your feet :)

Family Leisure Centre: The best indoor waterslides you'll find! Visit the family leisure centre for a getaway to the saunas, swimming centre, olympic sized swimming pool, whirlpool, hot tubs and snake waterslide; Open all year round. Also, do not forget to visit the skating rink, football and soccer fields as well.

Esplanade: Looking to see a local production, a touring ballet, a play, a musical, a stand-up act, or a concert? Make sure to grab your tickets and visit the Esplanade :) The Esplanade offers you a chance to view many different kinds of performances-whether its a monologue, school play, ballet or musical the Esplanade has it all. While your at it take a look at the museum displaying historic artifacts that present the history of the town and community artwork!

Medicine Hat Stampede: At the end of July each year Medicine Hat hosts their annu al Stampede. Providing a chance for people all over Canada a time to enjoy the rodeo, fireworks, amusement park rides, shopping, food, games and performances! This year the Stampede will be held from July 28th-31st. I will also be performing and appearing at the Stampede this year-drop on by and say hi!

History:

From 1883, the Canadian Pacific Railway has been apart of Medicine Hat's history. With the building of a railroad by the CPR, the tent town was born. With the new arrival of the railroad came the Northwest Mounted Police. Our abundance of oil and gas brings an easy and inexpensive source of energy to our residents. In 1906, Medicine Hat was incorporated into a city. Medicine Hat is also known to be the sunniest and hottest city in all of Canada.

I look forward to be representing the beautiful city I've been born and raised in

for sixteen years at the Miss Teen Canada World-Pageant.

Hoedown Throwdown

Mon, May 10, 2010 - 9:59AM 3 Comments

Here is a sneak peak of some of the footage we used for Shaw TV.

On Sunday evening, I had the privelege of teaching these four wonderful girls the Hoedown Throwdown (as seen on the Hannah Montana movie)! They had to learn it in within an hour! Then it was time to shoot the video, they did a pretty amazing job for learning the entire dance within such a short amount of time. From left we have Kailee Kalmring, Cassandra Oulette, Shayla Oulette (Middle, Me), Dee-Anna Wild and Kana Uchiumi. Thanks ladies for coming out :)

We had a blast from beginning to end. Teaching them the proper steps, and improvising the first few :) With time I'm sure we can improve this so it will be ready at its best to perform for the Medicine Hat stampede and rodeo! I also through a bit of Miss Teen Canada in there by wearing the same pick cowboy hat I wore during "Man I feel like a Woman", it reminded me of when we only had a few hours to learn a complete dance routine- in heels! Good memories and more to come! I can't wait to meet all the wonderful contestants that will be competing in Toronto :) Very exciting!

Thanks,

Shayla Jade xoxo
